Hand rendering

On monday we had a look at the basics of hand rendering techniques for creating Typography. Above is an example of the different words used to describe each part that makes up the structure of the letters in a full typeface. I can see that similar characteristics are repeated throughout an entire typeface.

We then had to identify these things ourselves and here is the result:



  It is hard to determine which letters were upper and lower case so identifying the capline etc. was difficult and ambigous in some of the letters without viewing the whole typeface.

I then had to copy typefaces unaided by rulers etc. this is the result:


As you can see, they are entirely accurate because of the lack of tools used. However there are different techniques you can uses like just taking a step back and observing from a greater distance the proportions of the text. Also the actual pencil can be used to measure by eye the proportions of each letter.
